Show me the Monet! The art market bounces back

After the fairytale boom came the 2008 bust and everyone lived unhappily ever after. Even worse, art was being packed away with the other distressed assets – the yachts, the condos and the ruined reputations – and sold to clear debts. Really, there were some times last year when the art market was about as lively as one of Damien Hirst’s famous pickled shark installations. Now, however, it seems the art market is coming back from the dead. Record-breaking collectors are starting to return to salerooms, wealthy Asian buyers are beginning to flex their financial muscles and auctioneers are starting to smile again (albeit cautiously).
