The curving, gleaming titanium roof of the Hotel Marqués De Riscal in northern Spain looks as if a giant has crushed huge ribbons of multi-coloured metal and flung them far into the countryside of the Rioja region. It’s an astonishing architectural achievement designed by Frank O Gehry the man who created the equally strange but hugely famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Nestling among the traditional vineyards of region, the Marqués is an overwhelming statement of design and function blended into one. It seems to be more like a sculpture than a hotel, but beneath those purple and gold swirls of titanium are 43 suites a one-star Michelin restaurant, a swimming pool, fitness centre and shop.
