Hard cell: creating luxury hotels from prisons
Alternative hotels feature by Andy for Elle Bulgaria
We’ve all been there. The anonymous hotel that has all the charisma of a credit crunch accountant or the restaurant that is about as tasteless as a biscuit during a PowerPoint presentation. Well, if that sounds like your kind of travel experience you need to take a break. Ideally a prison break. What I’m saying is bang yourself up in jail and see how you feel after a restful night behind bars. There’s plenty of choice around the world. After all prisons were originally custom designed with accommodation in mind. The difference these days, however, is that many of these correctional facilities are being transformed into designer hotels, fashionable restaurants and even activity holidays. Patronising wardens, scary showers and homemade weapons are out and in are thick bathrobes, spa amenities and ‘corporate experiences’.
